What does a Chiropractor do?

Chiropractors are concerned with the framework of bones and muscles that support the body (the ‘musculoskeletal system’). When a chiropractor looks at the body we are looking at what we refer to as your ‘alignment’ this means that your spine is in a straight line from the back view and from the sides it has three curves, the lumbar curve, the thoracic curve and the cervical curve. We look to see if your shoulders are level, your pelvis is level and that your arms and legs rest at about the same length and that your head is balanced correctly on the top of your spine, all with free and comfortable movement.

Problems and pain can occur for many reasons including:

  Incorrect lifting

  Poor posture

  Lack of exercise

  Every day wear and tear

If your alignment is effected by any of the above this will create what the chiropractor refers to as a ‘misalignment’. These problems may cause pressure on the nerves in the body. Chiropractic treatment is simply a method of adjusting the bones of your body to improve skeletal alignment. In doing so, it helps your nervous system work more efficiently, relieves pain and discomfort and increases mobility.

Depending on your condition your chiropractor may manipulate your spine or other joints and give you advice on stretches, exercise, self-help, rehabilitation, diet and lifestyle.
